Many educators are skeptical about young children using computers in early childhood programs. However, if computers are used properly, that is, in a manner commensurate with the developmental stages of children, computer-writing can be an effective means of fostering children`s emerging literacy. This study analyzes the characteristics of computer writing sessions in the Emergent Literacy paradigm in order to provide guidelines for planning developmentally appropriate computer-writing sessions. Children`s computer-writing in Emergent Literacy programs is an explorative process, integrated with play, and accompanied by reading behavior. This process involves the same developmental characteristics that are present when children explore writing using paper and pencil. In addition, computer-writing activities offer opportunities to promote cooperation among children that paper and pencil writing activities often do not. If the basic principles of `Emerging Literacy` are faithfully observed and emphasis is given to the social aspect of learning to write, computer-writing can definitely support children`s literacy development.
