A Study on Literary Topography of the novels by Kim Dong-Lee
The theme in Kim Dong-Lee's novels has been seen through making space into places. His system of thought, which plays the focal role in his works, in his life-longing natural view and allotment of his life spaces to places. His life-longing natural view is linked with the eternal return to the nature and his allotment of his life space to ;laces implies the reflection of real world. In his novels, space and places are closely linked with and are transferred into his literary topography by his consciousness. The purpose of this thesis is to search for the characteristics of his novels on the basis of literary topography of his novels.
Several critics have referred to the concept of a space and a place.; Tuan Yi-Fu, Miller J. Hillis, Bachelard Gaston, Eliade Mircea, and Tuan Yi-Fu say that the space's concept is to perceive the free and huge plain before making a place and that the place's concept is the safe and comfortable location like a hometown and a living space. He thinks that human stays in the limited place but always longs for the freedom of space. Miller J. Hillis understands that a space and a place in the topography is to accomplish the formation of a place by endowing the strange space the system. Namely, the strange space becomes the place which makes the new order with human intervention. Bachelare Gaston says that the basis of literary theory is the image's originality through imagination. It means the place to reach the existence itself. His image and place reveal the spiritual aspect of human. Eliade Mircea says that the spacial center and the concrete place are sacred as the fundamental standard between the sacredness and the worldliness.
A space generally means nature to which man is indifferent. Man makes the open space change into his place by living there. The literary topography can obtain its position by a writer who systematically organizes the recognition of place and the ideal realm. A creative action in the literature revives reality in the unknown space by making it the fixed location., The literary topography in this article is the creative work to concentrate on the concept of a space and a place.
The literary topography created by Kim Dong-lee forms the idea and acquires the wholeness by searching for the true ego of reality and actuality.; He uses the geographical feature in order to describe the difficult society in the period of Japanese colony and Korean war and to get the sacredness by establishing a special place which combines traditional consciousness with human archetype. Concretely, the concept of a place is exposed by life space.
The location in a novel is embodied in character's life space on which Kim representatively reflects social reality and writer's potential thought. The uneasiness about an ego becomes easy in a private place like a house. The secrete space in a literature can be confirmed in boundaries of the original memory as a recollecting place of writer's consciousness. A living space means the first localized world and it is located at the center of existence. Kim Dong-lee's holy space has close relations with nature. It obtains the eternity of his life and the revolution toward the eternity, assimilating as a part of nature.
His works can be largely divided into two subjects; One is the social phenomenon and the literary topography. The other is the literary topography as a sanctum. The subjects are subdivided into four. They are as follow.
①As an alien land, a secluded house and a communicating space become a place, the argument about the reflection of reality shows to reflect poor social phenomena of Japanese colony on his novels.
②Through making a place, the exhausted life in ideological conflict between the right and the left during Korean war made him suffered from the extreme anxiety and the splitting process of family.
③The introduction of feng-shui as the perception of Korean tradition influences on writer's concerns and consciousness. It has deep relation with novel's characters of this novel.
④The sanctum as a topographical element has a close relation with the nature and human environments. Therefore, it is possible for a space to get the eternity by changing into the symbolic place of a sanctum.
The present thesis analyzed Kim Dong-lee's novels from the geographical view of point. Making a place of a space established by writer's imagination shapes the literary topography. Kim's novels display his peculiar literary imagination through building a place in a space. Most of his novels deal with life consciousness and making a place. He tries to make a place through the conflict between the society and the ego under social phenomenon and geographical space. The conflict and fixation of the right and the left ideology during Korean war made him think about human existence. This article also analyzed Kim's works by means of feng-shui based on the traditional thought about nature and human life. Feng-shui makes a holy place in the space of the literary topography and means a location to obtain the eternity.
The object of this treatise is the literary geography to make a place of a narrow space which is linked with the background to get out of an element of space with time and chronological spacialty. This study on the literary topography will be the foundation for researching Kim Dong-lee's novels more deeply.
