The Site of WangHeung-sa Temple the one of the famous temples of BaekJe is located in Buyeo(扶餘) Chungnam Province South Korea. That Temple was built in 577A.D. It had been maintained until when BaekJe was destroyed by the combined forces of Silla(新羅) and T'ang(唐). The Site is excavating from 2001 until now. In 2007 so many relics was found by the researchers in the hole of cornerstone of wooden pagoda. Especially now we mainly concern about the sarira-caskets in the relics on the view of academy. There are three sarira-caskets One is the bronze cylinder-shaped box another is silver vessel and the other is golden bottle.
I Think that we should treat these sarira-caskets as very important relics in the art history of Korea because not only the most early thing as the sarira-casket but also as the most meaningful symbols of the art of BaekJe. These three sarira-caskets were found in shape with piled up namely one on bottom of the other. Until now the sarira-casket from the three stories pagoda of GamEun-sa(感恩寺) are known to the most early sarira-caskets But from now with this WangHeung-sa sarira-casket we should re-write the art history of Korea. In addition to we should study about the carved 29 characters on the surface of the bronze cylinder-shaped box. According to the characters we know the facts that who and when and why the sarira-caskets were made. the translation is like below.
"On February 15th in 577 the king Chang(昌) of BaekJe built the temple'for his dead prince'(or also translate to'the Third prince of him'). From beginning there were two sariras but later two changed to three by the creation of God."
This sarira-casket shows the beauty of art of BaekJe. And it let us know the the another facts about the cause and occasions of building of WangHeung-sa and the wooden temple(王興寺). So we can have various significant historic aspects through this sarira-casket.
