하나님 심정의 목회상담 = Pastoral Counseling of cordis Dei

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Pastoral counseling has been developed in the context of the western dualism, individualism and a culture of exhibition-oriented emotion. It has greatly influenced on Korean churches and Christians. However, it also revealed its liability and limitation due to the following reasons: first, Korean affection culture is different from the western one, and secondly, Korean pastoral counselors have not contextualized it appropriately. Now, it can be said that the majority of pastoral counseling in Korea has been heavily influenced and altered by Western psychology. In addition to that, “spiritual homelessness” is prevailing among Korean Christians. Thus, in this article, I would like to suggest a model for Korean pastoral counseling by introducing the core value of the Korean affection culture - shimjeong and chehyoul (sympathy-laden empathy) - and a useful use of the written Word of God. The ultimate goal of pastoral counseling would be to help the counselee meet God at the level of shimjeong so that he or she can grow spiritually and emotionally and live a transformed life. The shimjeong therapy includes its exhibition, its transaction and its mutual empathy. The initial action for the shimjeong therapy is its exhibition. It is not solution-oriented but release-oriented and happens in case that the counselee establishes true companionship with the counselor. The shimjeong therapy, although it has not been theorized and systemized enough, has been very influential to Korean people. The strength and capability of the shimjeong therapy also appears in the Biblical stories. The biblical characters such as Job, Jonah, Elijah, the Prodigal Son, and many others experienced the transaction of their shimjeong with God’s shimjeong (cordis Dei). They all encountered and embodied God’s heart into their own hearts and lived the transformed life. Shimjeong transaction and its therapy in the biblical stories need to be further studied and elaborated in order to develop a good model for Korean pastoral counseling that embraces the dynamics and vitality of the Gospel.
