‘직업 예술인’의 정체성 - 복수의 직업 정체성을 지닌 예술가와의 심층인터뷰를 중심으로 - = Job Identities of the Creatives - Interviews with the Artists Holding Multiple Jobs and Job Identities -

“Creativity” is a crucial virtue in the arts, yet it is also relevant in every corner our lives these days. This increasing awareness of creativity may be the result of the great merging of science and the arts, especially in the field of information/communication technology; however, the ardent pursuit of creativity reveals the rise of the cultural capital as well as the expansion of multiculturalism. This study asks how the creation of artwork can be considered as a form of labor to be socially acknowledged. We interviewed our study subjects, who were young artists holding multiple jobs, and noted a process of identification as an artist as an active recomposing of what an artist can be. Such an identification process is linked to the idea that these young artists, despite the fact that they hold multiple jobs in order to survive as social, economic, and artistic members within and outside of the field, are not subjugated under the social perception of “starving artist,” who are stigmatized by their own artworks and creations. Acts of creativity and the act of fiscal management are both vital to these young artists. In fact, they were well alert of the reality in these discrete fields; knowing that they need to work in and out of the field is part of what makes them an artist. This study calls for a further understanding of these artists and an examination of the conception of artists in our society, hoping to recognize and dissolve the ambiguity with which we have burdened them.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

현대 사회에서 인문, 예술, 경영, 공학 등 전 분야에 걸쳐 이제 ‘창의성’은 반드시 갖추고 키워야 할 중요한 덕목이 되었다. 이 같은 현상은 정보통신기술을 바탕으로 한 문화예술과 과학기술의 융복합 속에서 나타난 새로운 트렌드일 뿐만 아니라 문화자본의 가치가 상승하고 있음을 입증하는 것이기도 할 것이다. 본 연구는 문화산업에 종사하며 생계를 유지하고 있는 예술가들에 대한 직업 정체성에 주목한다. 이들은 창의성을 기반으로 하는 예술가 정체성을 바탕으로 경제적인 보상을 추구해야하는 사회적 직업을 갖게 되는 과정에서 갈등과 모순된 경험을 겪게 된다. 이 연구가 갖는 의미는 스스로를 낙인화 시키는 예술가의 창작과정은 수동적인 것이 아니라 예술가 스스로 자신의 작품을 해석하는 과정을 통해 끊임없이 새롭게 만들어진다는 점과 이러한 창작과정 자체가 정체성 갈등 및 형성을 설명하는데 중요한 기제로 작용한다는 점이다. 경제활동과 창조활동이라는 이분법을 넘어서 예술이라는 미적 가치의 추구를 어떻게 전개해나가는지, 혹은 이분법에 갇혀, 또 예술과 경제라는 모순된 가치의 중첩 안에서 헤매어 가능성을 가능성으로만 남길 것 인지, 본 연구에서는 이렇게 복수의 직업을 지닌 현대 한국 사회의 예술인들의 삶을 살펴봄으로서 그들의 자아가 분화되었는지, 혹은 미분화 되어있는지를 목격하고자 한다. 예술가들의 삶과 직업의 관계를 관찰함을 통해, 예술이라 불리는 창조라는 과정이 중층적 경계에 있음을, 그 불안한 위치성을 확인하고, 개선할 수 있는 계기가 되기를 희망한다.
