Neuromorphic architecture, which emulates the signal transmission of biological neurons through synaptic functions, has emerged as a promising candidate for next-generation computing systems due to its advantages of low energy consumption and high-speed parallel processing. Recent studies have reported various FET-based artificial synaptic devices, with electrolyte-gated transistors (EGTs) attracting significant attention for utilizing diverse electrolytes—polymers, gels, ionic liquids, and solids—that enable rapid ion migration. This ion movement allows precise conductance control, high gate capacitance, fast response, and low-voltage operation as artificial synapses. In recent years, significant progress has been made in optimizing EGT performance through advances in material selection, device architecture, and fabrication techniques. However, how ion-related physicochemical factors and operational mechanisms determine synaptic performance remains unclear, and it is difficult to investigate sub-nanosecond ion transport and kinetics solely through macroscopic electrical measurements. Herein, an integrative approach combining electrochemical analysis and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations is proposed, supported by experiments, to investigate the correlation between electrolyte composition and key synaptic functions: i) long-term memory and ii) linear conductance modulation characteristics.
First, electrochemical analysis is presented to address the correlation between ion species and representative synaptic functions—long-term memory and linear/symmetry conductance modulation—using poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based EGTs with three alkali ions: Li⁺, Na⁺, and K⁺. Cyclic voltammetry is employed to identify the types of electrochemical reactions occurring at the channel/electrolyte interface depending on the ion types, which ultimately determine the nonvolatile memory behavior of the EGTs. In addition, through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and qualitative analysis of the electrolytes, it is confirmed that intrinsic electrolyte properties—such as crystallinity, solubility, and ionic conductivity—and ion dynamics comprehensively govern the linearity and symmetry of conductance modulation. Consequently, these results demonstrate that long-term memory and linear weight update characteristics vary depending on ion species and underlying mechanisms, exhibiting trade-offs based on the specific synaptic function targeted.
Second, MD simulations employing the all-atom optimized potentials for liquid simulations (OPLS-AA) force field are performed alongside experimental validation on Li-EGTs with varying ion concentrations within PEO electrolyte. The MD simulations demonstrate that variations in salt concentration significantly influence the Li⁺ coordination environment, thereby modulating the ion transport mechanisms. Experimental analyses validate these concentration-dependent transitions in ion dynamics and phase states. As a result, Li-EGTs optimized based on these insights demonstrate enhanced performance in neuromorphic computing by suppressing the intrinsic diffusive dynamics of ions, enabling more precise sequential weight updates.
This study aims to elucidate the fundamental mechanisms governing synaptic functions in EGTs. Electrochemical analysis differentiates the relative contributions of interfacial reactions and bulk ion transport to each function, while femtosecond‑resolved MD simulations reveal ion–polymer interactions beyond experimental resolution. By correlating these molecular‑level insights with device‑level performance, these results present an unified framework not only to achieve superior synaptic characteristics but also to guide component optimization for high‑performance EGTs.
