This paper contributes to securing patient safety and improving quality. Basic data to come up with a method that can reduce missed nursing care by understanding types, frequency, and related factors of missed nursing care of the nurses is provided.
Data was collected with structured questionnaire and a survey was conducted from the 6th to the 24th of September, 2013. Research was done with 193 questionnaires by conducting a survey of 5 general hospitals. The hospitals are located in Daejeon and Chungcheongbuk-do. Structured questionnaire was used as a research tool for missed nursing care. The questionnaire was evaluated and revised by adapting the development and testing of a tool to measure missed nursing care (Kalisch and Williams published in 2009) to match Korean clinical situation. An adaptation of a tool to measure missed nursing care by E.J. Lee (2013) was used for related factors of missed nursing care.
Data was analyzed with frequency, percentage, average, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, and Scehffe’s test by using statistical program SPSS/WIN 20.0.
Results of the study are as follows:
1. Missed nursing care of nurses working at a general ward of general hospital (over 500 beds) is measured as 4-point scale and total missed nursing care is 1.93-point (20.8%). Hygiene/skin nursing has the most missed nursing care with 2.59-point (48.6%) and blood transfusion has the least missed nursing care with 1.06-point (4.9%).
2. According to general and professional characteristics of nurses, there is a difference on missed nursing care depending on the total number of years in service and extra duty hours. There is no difference on missed nursing care depending on the highest level of education, work unit, and the number of patients that a nurse takes care of per day.
3. Related factors of missed nursing care of nurses working at a general ward of general hospital with over 500 beds are classified into three categories. Human resources is recognized as the most related factor followed by material resources and communication (team work).
4. When it comes to perception difference on related factors of missed nursing care according to general and professional characteristics of nurses, extra duty hours and the number of patients that a nurse takes care of per day have statistically significant difference. And there is no perception difference according to age, the highest level of education, work unit, and the total number of years in service.
This study provides data for continuous education to improve the quality of patient safety and nursing by conducting a survey on reality of missed nursing care of nurses and related factors. Based on the results, further studies are suggested on objective measurement method for missed nursing care, relationship between human resources management and missed nursing care, and effects of missed nursing care on results of patients.
