‘인 디스 월드(In This World)’를 통해 본 세계화와 난민적 삶의 생성 = Globalization and the Creation of Refugee Lives Through 'In This World’

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Based on Zigmund Bauman's discussion of refugees as a byproduct of globalization and their existential crisis, this paper analyzes how refugee life is depicted in the film ‘In This World’. The thesis of this paper can be summarized as threefold. First, while ‘In This World’ captures the journeys of two refugees, Jamal and Enayat, in the form of a road movie, it reveals a inconsistency between content and form by showing the fundamental unattainability of the travelers' goal of a 'better tomorrow'. This inconsistency corresponds to the contradictory situation that refugees find themselves in due to the effects of globalization, and ‘In This World’ highlights the fate of refugees who are forced to move repeatedly as vagabonds. Second, ‘In This World’ problematizes the thriving people smugglers business as a structural effect of globalization. This is represented through the people smugglers that Jamal and Enayat repeatedly encounter on their journey. By highlighting the way Jamal and Enayat are treated by people smugglers as if they were pieces of luggage to be transported in a truck, ‘In This World’ signifies refugees as human waste generated by the effects of globalization. Third, ‘In This World’ reminds us that refugees are not economic migrants but victims of violent events by showing the emotional compassion of ethnic Kurdish people for Jamal and Enayat. In addition, by sensually recreating the process of refugees dying in containers, the film raises the issue of how people outside of the event can relate to the suffering of refugees that cannot be represented in verbal form.
