The ultimate purpose of education in every country is to bring up its people who have their firm identity. To achieve this purpose, a country's culture and arts should be one of the most important educational contents. However, the current education of culture and arts throughout the Korean society has been offered separately in each subject, focusing on skills. With this education, it is difficult to raise citizens with their identity because it can't lead people to understand the intrinsic natures of culture and arts. Thus, it is necessary to teach students intrinsic characteristics of Korean culture and arts. I suggest that this kind of education be offered from the elementary school years which serve the very foundation of universal education. To meet this suggestion, this study aimed to search for methods of integrated teaching among the course of study connected with culture and arts with a focus on Korean music in elementary school in order to promote the understanding of intrinsic natures of Korean culture and arts.
To carry out my study, first I made a selection of subjects applicable to the integrated teaching. I examined the elements which constitute the characteristics of Korean culture, and then analyzed the contents of textbooks on the basis of selected elements. After analyzing, I chose some common materials throughout many subjects among the contents of textbooks and teacher's manuals for elementary schooler 3 to 6. Again, on the basis of common materials, the most basic and comprehensive subjects were drawn. As a result, I selected three main subjects as follows; 'Life and Music', 'Seasonal Customs and Music' 'Ideas and Music'. 'Life and Music' was again divided into 'Work and Music' and 'Play and Music'. The former involves sub-subjects such as 'farmer's songs', 'fisherman's songs' and other folk songs related to labor, while the latter does 'traditional children's songs' (songs for play), 'Pungmul-nori', 'masque dances' and other folk songs related to play. In addition, 'Seasonal Customs and Music' involves 'New Year and Daeborm', 'Dano', 'Baekjung', and 'Chusuk' as sub-subjects associated with annual or seasonal customs of Korea. In 'Ideas and Music' 'Shamanism', 'Buddhism', 'Confucianism' and other Ideas like Pungryu were chosen as its sub-subjects.
After selecting these subjects I searched teaching methods for each subject. First, I presented the main point of the subjects in the overview of each subject. Secondly, I also presented teaching contents, teaching goals and teaching stages for each subject. On the basis of this presentation thirdly, I searched subjects-integrated learning contents, sequential learning contents for each grade, teaching goals and learning contents for each sub-subject in detail. Lastly, I developed and presented a practical lesson plan with a material chosen from each sub-subject.
This study is an attempt to promote the understanding that the integrated education of culture and arts which contains the overall aspects can play a short cut to realize the true nature of culture and arts. Especially, the integrated teaching with a focus on Korean music which bring its whole characteristics into relief can lead to culture and art education with established identity.
