Music is important for dance therapists since music is very often used to encourage or activate their clients` movements. The use of music in dance therapy helps the clients sustain activity and use fine motor skills. Especially, the rhythm helps the participants get a strong sense of group identity and a feeling of belonging as it provides movements with a certain dynamics and stimuli to a more rhythmic and energetic level. Lijian Espenak is regarded as one of the representative dance therapists who most actively, intellectually, and creatively utilized music and its rhythm in her dance therapy programs such as movement diagnostic test and improvisation. It is necessary for dance therapists to study music in order to get better results through more effective use of music in their therapy programs. The proper selection of music as well as the useful application of its elements reflecting their characteristics is important; the therapists intellectually and intelligently get the benefits of music and of the principles derived from music therapy itself, in addition to those of dance and its therapy. Consequently, they need to carefully and effectively design the therapy programs according to the emotional and physical symptoms of the clients, thereby bringing the best results of its own.
