In this study, a through review of the meaning of self-knowledge and self-respect advocated by Mencius(孟子:371~289 B.C.) was attempted for re-illuminating Mencian thoughts in the light of modern system of character education. Mencius maintained the structure of Confucius's original vision, but set it upon a new foundation: a subtle yet powerful theory about human nature. We can see Mencius's philosophical views as part of the emerging debate about the true character of human nature. Mencius believed that, by nature, human beings are inclined toward the good, and that if we accord with this inclination we will develop into full moral beings and fulfill the grand Confucian vision. Mencius in honored for his inheritance of the orthodox doctrines of Confucian ethics. In particular, the essential features of Mencius's view on human nature is exemplified in admission of the good nature endowed by heaven. His view is epitomized in four sprouts(四端), namely, benevolence, righteousness, propriety, and wisdom.
Mencius explicitly linked the task of self-cultivation with the development of one's Heavenly conferred nature. In Mencius, Education as a self-cultivation is therefore instrumental in development of the given potential of human nature by cultivation of the inherent good intellect and good faculty in commensuration with the teaching displayed in the doctrines of Confucian ethics and morality. furthermore, emphasis of mental displine is an indispensable component of the instructional program as noted in review of the educational concept of Mencius. for this undertaking, he advocated the art in 'seek for the lost mind'(求放心), 'holding one's mind'(存心), and 'nourishing one's nature'(養性) base on "getting or finding the way in oneself"(自得). In sum, his thoughts of the human nature and of self-cultivation are very suggestive on groping for the direction of the contemporary character education.
