The purpose of this study is to find possible spillover effects of multilateral synchronized volatility upon weekly stock markets in Korea, the U.S., Japan, the U.K., France and Germany through the multivariate GARCH-M model.
The results of this study can be outlined as follows: First, in the model of conditional returns, it was found that past stock market in Korea had statistically significant positive spillover effects of conditional returns on current market in the U.K. and Germany, and past stock market in the U.S. had significant positive spillover effects of returns only upon current market in the U.K.. And it was found that past market in Japan had significant negative spillover effects of returns on current market in Korea and France, and past British market had significant positive spillover effects of returns on current Japanese market, while having significant negative effects on current own market in the U.K.. Notably, past market in the U.S. had most significant positive spillover effects of returns on current British market, showing higher coefficient of positive spillover effect of returns than that of other variables, which was followed by significant returns spillover effects between the U.K. and Japan, between France and Japan and so forth. The U.S. market only showed very significant volatility spillover effects in conditional mean, indicating significant negative relations of expected returns with conditional volatility, but low adjusted coefficient of determination. Second, in the model of conditional volatility, it was found that past Korean market had significant positive and negative spillover effects of conditional volatility upon current markets in the U.S., and U.K., France and Germany respectively, except Japan. In addition, past the U.K. market had no significant spillover effects of volatility on current Korean or Japanese market, but had significant negative spillover effects of volatility upon current own the U.S. market alone. On the other hand, past Japanese market had significant negative spillover effects of volatility on current markets of Korea, the U.S. and Japan, so the impact of volatility in past Korean market had significant effects on volatility of current the U.S., and U.K., France and Germany respectively. The volatility impact of past the U.S. market had significant effects on the volatility of current own market, and the volatility impact of past Japan market had significant effects on volatility of current Korea, the U.S., and own Japan. Past British market had most significant negative spillover effects of volatility on current Korean market, showing stronger impact and higher coefficient of negative volatility spillover effects than that of other variables, which was followed by significant volatility spillover effects between past France and current the U.S., between past Germany and current, and so on. All the 5 major global markets except Japan showed significant and very high persistence of volatility.
Hence, the multivariate GARCH-M model of this study didn’t find the evidence of any significant synchronized spillover effects of conditional returns or conditional volatility from the U.S. market to Korea, or vice versa.
