Healthcare-associated infection (HAI) is one of the most important causes of neonatal morbidity and mortality. The latest developments in neonatal care have greatly improved the neonatal outcomes. Nevertheless, preterm infants, especially those with very low birth weight, remain at a high risk of HAIs and subsequent poor outcomes. Nationwide reference data are the need of the hour to determine the actual disease burden. The Korean National Healthcare-associated Infection Surveillance System for infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (KONIS-NICU) was established in 2019 as part of the KONIS, operated by the Korean Society for Healthcareassociated Infection Control and Prevention. Monthly data collection regarding the patient’s stay, use of the central line, and all laboratory-confirmed blood stream infection events were recorded in the KONIS Web-based Report and Analysis Program system. All data were collected and reported by the infection control nurses in charge based on the manuals. On-site visits to support the participating institutions are being regularly conducted. The recently added NICU module to the KONIS is expected to provide valuable surveillance data to help achieve the goal of decreasing HAIs in the NICUs in Korea.
