The rapid development of information and communication technologies makes a great impact on the national traffic system. New concept called Advanced Hightway System has been proposed and developed in many countries to alleviate traffic problems. Im this research, the objective is to develop and demonstrate a platoon system which is the core technology in developing AHS. The Platoon system consists of four Advanced Intelligent Vehicle in conjunction with the roadside system including the communication system which is used to control platoon system. The main control center controls all roadside systems, including vehicle detection sensors and wireless moderns which are connected to the road side network system, and gathers information of vehicles and road situations, Using these information the main control center sends control commands to AIV's. Each AIV operates automatically based on lateral control and longitudinal control technologies. Four vehicles cruise at the speed of 80Km/h with inter-vehicle distance of 10m during the ITS 1998 Seoul World Congress. The result developed during this research is very important because the platoon system is developed to achieve the goals of practicality and commercialization in the near future, and is the first step toward many challenging technical issues. As a consequence, the next traffic system for the future should be supported by both investment and research effort for the platoon system.
