정당화의 논증적 설명에 대한 소사의 비판 = Sosa's objection to the argumentative account of justification

국문 초록 (Abstract)

정당화의 논증적 설명에 따르면 믿음은 전제로 제시되는 이유들에 의해 옹호되는 경우에만 지식이 될 수 있다. 어네스트 소사는 정당화의 논증적 설명이 정당화의 무한후퇴나 악순환의 문제에 직면하기 때문에 이를 거부해야 한다고 주장한다. 정당화의 논증적 설명을 거부함으로써 그는 반성적 지식과 구분되는 동물적 지식이 가능함을 주장한다. 또한 이를 통해 그는 외재주의 인식론을 옹호한다.
이 논문의 목적은 정당화의 논증적 설명을 거부해야 한다는 소사의 주장을 비판하는데 있다. 이를 위해 필자는 세 가지를 주장한다. 첫째, 정당화의 논증적 설명은 약한 버전으로 해석될 수 있다. 둘째, 논증적 설명의 약한 버전조차 거부하는 것은 인식론적 논의의 최소 조건을 거부하는 것과 마찬가지다. 셋째, 무한후퇴나 악순환의 문제를 피할 수 있는 논증적 설명이 불가능하다고 볼만한 충분한 이유가 없다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

According to the argumentative account of justification, a belief can amount to knowledge only through the backing of reasons adduced as premises. Ernest Sosa rejects this account by claiming that it faces the infinite regress of justification or the problem of vicious circularity. By rejecting this account, he defends animal knowledge as distinct from reflective knowledge. And he thereby defends epistemic externalism.
The purpose of this paper is to argue that his rejection of the argumentative account of justification is unsuccessful. For this purpose, I argue for three things. First, the argumentative account of justification can be interpreted in a weak sense. Second, to reject even the weak version of the argumentative account of justification is tantamount to rejecting the minimum condition for our epistemological discourse. Third, as a matter of fact, an argumentative account of justification which can avoid infinite regress and vicious circularity is arguably possible.
