The purpose of this study is to analyze the operational experiences and improvement needs of an internship education program for international students, and to suggest practical improvement measures for similar future programs. Recent support policies for international students have expanded beyond mere recruitment to enhancing employment competencies and fostering long-term settlement in Korea. However, facilitating domestic employment for these students requires more than the simple provision of job information; it necessitates comprehensive education programs that simultaneously support Korean language proficiency for business, understanding of organizational culture, development of job competencies, and adaptation to the corporate field.
To this end, this study applied a qualitative case study method to the "Seoul Attractive Jobs Project." The research participants consisted of five international students who took part in the project's pre-job training and corporate internship, one corporate manager, and one staff member from the operating organization. Data were primarily collected and analyzed through semi-structured in-depth interviews using thematic analysis, while program operation documents, curriculum materials, and satisfaction survey results were utilized as supplementary data.
The main findings are as follows. First, the internship education program provided the participating international students with opportunities to experience Korean corporate work practices and organizational culture. Although the students faced difficulties in business Korean writing, phone communication, reporting methods, the use of professional terminology, and communication with supervisors and colleagues, they enhanced their job confidence and realistic understanding of domestic employment through actual work experiences.
Second, generative AI was utilized as a supplementary tool to support the students' job performance. It assisted in drafting Korean documents, organizing data, preparing report drafts and presentations, and translating, thereby contributing to reducing the students' initial workload. However, it was confirmed that the use of generative AI has limitations in replacing industry-specific professional knowledge, market understanding, and business judgment. Accordingly, generative AI training needs to be linked with actual job tasks and basic industry-specific knowledge education, rather than being limited to simple tool-use instruction.
Third, there were expectation gaps among the international students, participating companies, and the operating organization. While students expected practical work experience, career development, and domestic employment opportunities, companies expected a certain level of practical job performance and industry understanding. The operating organization recognized program completion, corporate matching, employment linkage, and the enhancement of settlement possibilities as its main goals. The study identified that these expectation gaps could lead to discrepancies between pre-job training and actual work, difficulties in job matching, mentoring burdens for companies, and adaptation challenges for students.
Based on these findings, this study proposes four improvement measures: (1) designing pre-job training that reflects the actual demands of participating companies; (2) strengthening business Korean and office practical skills training; (3) refining the job matching and feedback systems by considering students’ majors, interests, and language abilities alongside the companies' job requirements; and (4) linking generative AI utilization training with actual job tasks and domain knowledge education.
This study holds academic significance in that it analyzes the linkage process between pre-job training and corporate internships—an area relatively underexplored in research on employment support for international students—from the multidimensional perspectives of students, participating companies, and the operating organization. Furthermore, it suggests that for international student internship education programs to operate effectively, education, job matching, mentoring, feedback, and employment linkage must be organically integrated.
