      The purpose of this study is to present a teaching method that applies self-determination theory to learn English for specific purposes effectively. When basic psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness are satisfied, intrinsic motivation is increased, and self-regulation occurs to induce autonomous behavior, which can positively affect personal growth, happiness, and well-being. Therefore, a teaching method in English for specific purposes may need to be proposed to encourage learners to participate autonomously in learning by controlling and regulating their behavior and to become interested in learning itself. First, the degree of self-determination motivation was measured by conducting a survey on forty-four college students majoring in nursing. Then problems with the teaching method applied by the researcher were identified through the participants’ self-assessment in learning English for specific purposes. After analyzing their motivation types and their self-assessment results, a lesson plan that could stimulate self-determination motivation by satisfying psychological needs was proposed.
