This study examined the content and purposes of private conversations among young children through qualitative research methods. The subjects included 26 five-year-olds and one teacher in Bada class at Sanduel kindergarten in Seoul, Korea. The data consisted of 58 participant observations, 11 in-depth interviews with the teacher, and informal interviews with the teacher and children. The content of private conversations included boasting, deviation, difficulty, gossip, and promises. The children boasted of their abilities, possessions, and families, and confessed that they violated the school rules or their promises with their mothers. They talked about their difficulties due to private education or conflicts with their siblings, made negative assessments of their peers or parents, and exchanged promises with their peers. The purposes of private conversation included presenting one’s self, becoming part of a group, and sharing pleasures. The young children revealed their presence through their private conversations. They found common elements among themselves, and shared their secrets and special experiences through private conversations, thus becoming more intimate. Private conversations among peers helped the young children lead happy lives in kindergarten. Those findings raise the need for more interest in, and research on, private conversations to better understand the lives of young children and their peer relationships.
