The High-frequency (30 ~ 120 kHz) bottom reflection loss at rough water-sediment interface is affected by the grain size distribution of the sediments. Bottom reflection loss at the rough interface consists of the coherent component and incoherent component. When the RMS height is indicated by the grain size distribution of the sediments, the incoherent component is negligible and the coherent component can only express the bottom reflection loss. The roughness of the bottom surface is represented by “acoustical roughness, ”. The grain size of sandy sediments is and the dependence as a function of frequency. We suggest the modified bottom reflection loss model, Hanyang University Bottom Reflection Loss model (HYBRL model) that include in the deviation of the reflection loss as a function of the grain size distribution and frequency dependence. And the results of the HYBRL model are verified by the laboratory (water tank) and field experiments.
Lab experiment, the water tank was filled with 0.5 m-thick-sandy sediments to make the condition similar to the real ocean. We measured the sound velocity and the grain size analysis of the sediment to make sure the similarity to the real ocean bottom. Reflection losses, which were experimentally obtained for grazing angles 25 ~ 90 and frequency ranges 40 ~ 120 kHz, were compared with the existing lossy Rayleigh reflection model results, that is, APL-UW model results. We find the frequency dependence over 70 kHz, which is not found in the existing model and similar deviation with the grain size distribution. And we did the experiment with a glass interface to compare the reflection loss on the perfect plane with that on the rough interface.
Another Lab experiment, we measure the sound velocity in the several different sediments using the frequency 30 kHz. That is different from the existing method of sound velocity measurement, which measures using from hundreds to thousands of frequencies in the laboratory after gathering the sample in the ocean and then converses the results on the frequency band that we want to get. For various seven sediments of gravel, sand, silt and mixed forms measured the sound velocity ratio and the water content, and then compared with the predictions from Hamilton & Bachman (1982) and APL-UW (1994). The measured sound velocity ratio and the water content seem to have a tendency to similarity to the model predictions. Therefore the laboratory environments are similar to the ocean’s.
In-situ experiment for the verification of the HYBRL model and the frequency dependence of sandy sediments is performed aboard the RV Tamyang of the Pukyong University during 19 to 24 May 2003 in the south sea. The grain size analysis is conducted for six sites using the piston core. The normal incident bottom reflection loss data are measured by the equipment for multi-frequency transmission (EMFT) – frequency 30, 50, 80, 100, 120 kHz – made of us. We fitted the results of bottom reflection loss measurement as a function of frequency using the Robust method and the least square method. Those results confirmed the increment of bottom reflection loss with frequency in sandy sediments.
The frequency dependence of the proposed HYBRL model is a important information for the bottom sediment classification and the detection of buried objects. And high-frequency sonar systems should consider the frequency dependence of sediment type and grain size distribution of sediments.
