MMORPGs are a game space equipped with a system that allows many users to create designs through avatars that represent them instead of selecting from a designer’s options. This study is based on Turkle’s concept of identity (1984, 1995), which described the multiple identity projections revealed by users’ avatars in a virtual realm. This study showed that the points raised in Turkle’s discussion based on observations of MUD players have changed with advancements in MMORPG technology. This study revealed that the core of this change is the evolution of creative expressions of avatars through the creation system, resulting in motives for avatar customization that are not limited to online communication but are expanded to include users’ creative and playful qualities. This study used three-phase research to 1) examine users’ attitudes toward and selection and modification of gender as a reflection of users’ perceptions of identity play, which is the core of this study and 2) verify a model that illustrates the relationship among these components by explicating the concept of identity play that appears in these modifications and in users’ attitudes toward avatars.
