Background: Recently, cities have used distinctive IP characters to strengthen the identity and dissemination of tourism images. Urban IP characters can condense local culture into recognizable visual forms. This study examines Nanjing’s tourism image through network text sentiment analysis and visual sign analysis, and explores how the results can be transformed into design elements for a cultural content IP character.
Methods: This study selected Confucius Temple–Qinhuai River Scenic Area, Xuanwu Lake, and Zhongshan Scenic Area as representative tourist sites in Nanjing. Travelogue texts and tourism images from major online tourism platforms were analyzed. The research proceeded through network text sentiment analysis, visual sign analysis, design direction derivation, and design evaluation. Based on the two analyses, the design direction and major visual elements of Nanjing’s tourism cultural content IP character were derived and evaluated.
Results: The results show that tourists’ perceptions of Nanjing’s tourism image are formed around historical and cultural atmosphere, representative landscapes, and concrete tourism experiences. Visual signs such as night scenery, traditional architecture, commemorative spaces, and lake landscapes corresponded to emotional expressions such as being moved, surprise, peacefulness, and interest. These results were transformed into the character’s formative, decorative, and color elements. The final design received generally positive evaluations, especially in aesthetics, representativeness, dissemination potential, and cultural understanding, while emotional resonance required further improvement.
Conclusion:This study presents a research procedure that connects tourists’ textual emotional perceptions, visual signs of tourism images, and cultural content IP character design. It shows that tourism image analysis can provide a concrete basis for urban cultural content IP character design and offers implications for future studies on urban tourism images and IP character design.
