The purpose of this study was to find out the effects of emotion regulation strategies on the burnout of counselors, caused by their occupational stress. For this study, the relationship between each factor was identified. Also, this study attempted to figure out which emotion regulation strategy had moderate effects on occupational stress and psychological burnout. Sub factors of the emotion regulation strategy, which demonstrated significant effects, were analyzed accordingly. The number of participants was 171(23 males, 148 females), and they were asked to fill in three types of questionnaires: Korean Occupational Stress Scale Short Form(KOSS-SF), Maslach Burnout Inventory(MBI) and Emotion Regulation Strategy Questionnaire(ERSQ). Collected data was analyzed through correlation analysis, hierarchical regression analysis and stepwise regression analysis.
The results of this study are as follows:
First, adaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategy had a negative effect on psychological burnout caused by occupational stress. Maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategy and experiential emotion regulation strategy showed positive effects on psychological burnout caused by occupational stress.
Second, it was shown that among all subfactors of adaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategy, 'Think actively' and 'Accept cognitively' had negative effects on psychological burnout caused by occupational stress. Among the subfactors of maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategy, 'Think negatively' and 'Blame others' had positive effects on psychological burnout caused by occupational stress. 'Burst into negative emotion to others', a subfactor of maladaptive experiential emotion regulation strategy, showed the same results.
The results suggest that it is important to intervene in the psychological burnout of counselors caused by occupational stress, using emotion regulation strategies. This study will provide basic data needed to plan education programs, and subsequently provide prevention for psychological burnout of counselors in occupational stress situations.
