성기성물(成己成物) : 대안적 가치를 향하여 = Interconnected Realizations of Self and of All Others

국문 초록 (Abstract)

롤즈나 공동체주의자가 구성한 자유나 평등 개념은 독재나 착취 같은 역사적 왜곡의 치유적 가치라고 생각한다. 그러한 의미에서 이들은 인간 존재의 전제적(前提的) 가치일 뿐 인간 공동체의 추구적 가치, 본래적 가치가 아니라고 생각한다. 이 글은 인간의 추구적 가치로서 중용의 성기성물을 제안하여 이 명제의 정당성을 다음과 같은 논제들로써 지지하고자 한다: 성(誠)은 인간만이 아니라 만물의 구성적 성질이고 이 조건이 만족될 때, 개체의 성(性)이 나타나고, 동시에 그 개체가 성(成) 또는 이루어지고, 모두가 이루어지는 성(聖)의 경지에 이른다; 중용은 단순히 통계적 수치의 사건이 아니라 이루어지는 시중(時中)의 과정이다; 중용의 황금률은 “대접받고자 하는 대로 대접하라” 라는 거래적 지침이 아니라 “대접 받고 싶지 않은 방식대로 남을 대접하지 말라” 라는 인격성 보존원리이다; 성(誠)은 일회적 사건이 아니라 개과천선(改過遷善)을 들어내는 진화적, 내재적 구조의 과정이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

If conceptions of liberty or equality formulated by Rawls, Nozick, Marxists, or Communitarian philosophers are to be taken as therapeutic in the sense that they are prescriptions to concrete diagnoses of socio-political extortions such as colonialism, totalitarianism, capitalistic exploitations, they can be said to be values of presuppositions of human existence but not values of the human pursuits. This paper proposes as a value of the human pursuits the proposition that realizations of self and of all others are interconnected. I took the proposition from The Doctrine of the Mean(中庸), a key text of the Confucian tradition, and then to advance the proposition by arguing for the following theses: Integration(誠) is the principle of constitution not only of human beings but also of things organic or inorganic; the mean is a principle which is not merely statistical but expressive of the cosmic structural context(時中) when the realizations of all are achieved; the golden rule thereof is not a positive rule as in Kant that you treat others as you want to be treated, but a negative one(恕) that you don't treat others as you don't want to be treated; integration is not an event but a process which reflects an evolutionary or immanent principle(改過遷善) that one evolves toward what is right by removing what is wrong.
