This study is to find out the effects of the Social Skills Training Program on children's peer competence and acceptance. In order to accomplish this goal, the following hypothesis was settled and the experiments to prove the hypothesis were conducted grounded in theoretical backgrounds and in pre-studies about similar subjects.
Firstly, the peer competence of the students after the Social Skills Training Program is conducted will be significantly different from when the Social Skills Training Program isn't conducted. Secondly, in some subordinated factors of peer competence, there will be significant differences between the results before the Social Skills Training Program was applied to an experimental group of the students and the results after it was applied. Thirdly, the degree of peer acceptance after conducting the Social Skills Training Program was significantly different from the degree of peer acceptance when the program hadn't been conducted.
To verify the above hypothesis, 25 students in K Elementary school in Non-san city in Chung-nam province were selected as an experimental group. The method of this study was modified from the 'Young Peace Maker' in order to be suited to 3rd grade Elementary school students' psychological and cognitional characteristics. The 'Young Peace Maker' created by Corlette(1997) for 4~6th grade Elementary school students and middle school students, being consulted with the 'Peace Maker' by Kenneth(1991). Using the method, the Social Skills Training Program was conducted twice a week for 40 minutes for 6 weeks.
In this study, some test-sheets were used to take a measurement about peer competence and acceptance. In order to prove the hypothesis 1, 1-1 and 2, paired-t test was conducted, so that the differences between peer competence and acceptance after conducting the Social Skills Training Program and them before doing it.
According to the result of this study, it was proved that the average mark(M=2.80) of peer competence after the Social Skills Training Program was conducted to them was significantly different(t_(24)=2.546, p<.05) from the mark(M=2.86) after it was conducted. By the paired t-test, some differences in the field of sociability(t_(24)=2.105, p<.05), pro-social behaviors (t_(24)=2.743, p<.05), leaderships(t_(24)=2.447, p<.05) which were the subordinated factors of peer competence were proved.
Secondly, this study showed that there was a significant difference(t_(24)=-2.815 p<.0l) between peer acceptance after the Social Skills Training Program was conducted(M=42.60) and before it was(M=40.20).
According to the results of this study, I concluded that the Social Skills Training Program has an effect on developing peer competence and is beneficial improve peer acceptance. So, I figured out a possibility through this study, that is, in the variety of conflict situations that children can face, the Social Skills Training Program can help children display their positive social abilities, so that they can make beneficial social relationships with their peers.
