Corelation of Police and Crime Prevention Roh, Ho-Rae*The purpose of this study is to review Correlation of police and crime prevention. In the crime prevention of police, several theoretical approaches have been suggested. Deterrence theory emphasized the threat of punishment to inhibit wrongful behavior. The deterrent effect of punishment relies on the existence of three factors. there are the severity, certainty, and celerity of the punishment. Situational crime prevention approach focuses upon reducing opportunities for crime. the techniques of situational prevention included target hardening, assess control, formal surveillance, identifying property, removing inducements, deflecting offenders, and etc. Patrol is one of the main activities which deter crime. Quantity of patrol has been related to efficacy of crime prevention. The Kansas City Preventive Patrol Experiment(1972 - 1973) was the first scientfic research to measure the deterrent effect of patrol. This experiment found that variations in the level of patrol had no significant effect on either criminal activity or citizen feelings of safety. Increased levels of patrol did not result in an increase
