북한 민족주의의 전개와 발전: 민족공조론을 중심으로 = North Korea`s Nationalism In The Making: Its Emphasis On Inter-Korean Cooperation

This paper analyzed the development phase and significance of North Korea``s nationalism with the special weight on its Inter-Korean Cooperation in the era of the post-Cold war and rapprochement of the two Koreas. North Korea accepted nationalism as the counter-argument against the 1990s`` crisis. The nationalism in the 1990s was taken as the passive response to the overall crisis but it underwent changes in the 2000s to the offensive response in the form of nationalism of maneuver. The discourse of Inter-Korean Cooperation has been the chief weapon in the offensive response. The purpose of the discourse is to appeal to the Korean people``s emotion, to form the confrontational structure between Korean vs. American and to heighten Pyongyang``s negotiation power in dealing with Seoul and Washington. North Korea has been strengthening its efforts on exposition of the United States`` crimes, encouragement of anti-American struggles and denouncement against the South Korea``s conservative forces. The discourse has a number of significances. First, North Korea has taken the South Korean state as well as the civil society as the targets for arbitration. Second, North Korea has undertaken theorization in nationalism against the South Korean sentiment against the so-called United Front. Third, via North Korea``s changed perspectives of nationalism from difference and superiority to sameness and convergence, it has modified its identity in the direction of emphasis on the national homogeneity of the two Koreas, instead of its own line of socialism.
