한국의 동아시아 인식과 구상: 1960년대 김대중 사례 연구 = Kim Dae-jung`s Perception, Idea, and Design of East Asian Order during the 1960s

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper aims to analyze the former president of South Korea Kim Dae-jungOs perception and design of East Asian order and community-building during the 1960s. There have been three key issues : Korea-Japan diplomatic normalization, Korean troops participation to the Vietnam war, the ROK-US Agreement on Status of Force in Korea. Above all,he considered China as so important rather the Soviet Union in this area. Then, he recognized the necessity of normalizing Korea-Japan diplomatic relations for the construction of anti-Communist China alliance from the realist viewpoint. But he also emphasized the importance of liquidating the legacies of the colonial past between the two countries from the nationalistic-critical stance. About the issue of Vietnam war, Kim Dae-jung was in opposition to sending the Korean troops to that war, based on the ideals of Korean constitution. The third important issue at that time, The ROK-US Agreement on Status of Force in Korea, he criticized so harshly the dependent nature of the Korean-American Mutual Defense Treaty itself (1953) beyond concluding the Agreement. In conclusion, Kim Dae-jung presented an idea of East Asian regional collective security organization under the name of Free Asia Alliance or Free Democratic Allied Organization in Asia. This idea of creating an East Asian collective security organization against China was some unique at that time, and also having a purpose of checking Japan and U.S.-Japan alliance simultaneously by using that collective system.
