The son of Boleslav I, Boleslav II became Duke(or Prince) on his father’s death. Boleslav II maintained good relations with Henry, Duke of Bavaria and Mieszko, Duke of Poland. In 975, Boleslav II supported Henry during the civil war against Otto II, the German Emperor. In 977, Otto II defeated Boleslav II. Accordingly, the following year Boleslav II became a vassal of the Emperor. This approach to the German Emperor was to change the basis of Czech foreign policy. Such foreign policy of Boleslav II began to deteriorate relations between Poland and Czech. Afterward Czech is placed often in a difficult situation. Nevertheless, Boleslav II was trying to increase the status of the Czech kingdom. But those policies of him did not reap tangible effects. Boleslav II who converted to Christianity ’installed the Diocese of Prague in 973, placed at that time within the jurisdiction of the Archbishop of Mainz. In 982, Vojtch of Prague(later known as Saint Adalbert)was appointed to head the bishopric until he abandoned his primacy to lead a mission to the Old Prussians in 994. Vojtch of Prague was noted for charity, austerity, and zealous service to the Church. His duty was difficult even in baptized Bohemia, as the pagan creed was deeply embedded in people’s minds. Vojtch of Prague complained of polygamy and idolatry, which still were not unusual among the Czechs. He also strongly resented the participation of baptized Christians in the slave trade. In 989 he resigned from his bishop’s cloth and left Prague. He went to Rome und lived as a hermit in St.Alexis Benedictine monastery. Four years later, in 993, Pope John XV sent him back to Bohemia, and Vojtch of Prague became the bishop again. On 28 September 995, Boleslav II and his confederate Vrsovci stormed Libice in southern Bohemia and massacred the members of Slavnik dynasty. This clan had been the main rival of Premyslid power in Bohemia. Boleslav II’ brutal triumph ensured the unity of Bohemia under a single ruler.
