The purpose of this study was to synthesize the related variables of Eating Disorder conducted in Korea using a method of meta-analysis. The study was divided into two major branches. The first part was synthesized 88 studies focusing on the related variables of Eating Disorder to examine the tendency of Eating Disorder researches in Korea without any judge to make meta-analysis. In the other part, finally 40 quantitative studies were selected for the meta-analysis from the first part to analyzed the related variables of Eating Disorder. This study also assessed the relationship between moderator variables and actual effect size. The moderator variable of the study was the experimental year of each study, 1990s and 2000s studies.
The specific objectives of this study were as follows;
〈part 1〉
First, to examine the tendency of Eating Disorder researches in Korea from the begging of study(1990) to 2004(total 88 studies). Compared the variables of general group and of sports & dancer group.
〈part 2〉
Second, to examine the grand average effect size, the average effect size of each variable group, and average effect size of individual variables from the related variables of Eating Disorder.
Third, to examine the difference of each average effect size from the selected moderate variable; year of publications.
Forth, to present two models about the relationship between the variables and Eating Disorder for better understandings.
The study used the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis Program(A computer program for research synthesis program version 2) by Michael Borenstein & Hannah Rothstein, 2004.
Major results were summarized as follows;
〈part 1〉
First, the variable of 'sports events'(14. 9%) was the major cause in sports & dancer group, but in general group, 'body dissatisfaction/satisfaction'(18.2%) was the major cause.
〈part 2〉
Second, the grand average effect size of the related variables of Eating Disorder was .65. The total average effect size of external variable(socio-cultural factors) was .71, and the total average effect size of internal variable(individual & psychological factor) was .50. The highest effect on the 'drive to thinness', which was 1.05 effect size. On the other hand, the lowest variable was 'in/extroversion personality' based on the effect size, .005.
Third, by the published year as a moderator variable, the total average effect size were .58 in 1990s and .60 in 2000s. In 1990s, the average effect size of external variable was .59, and the average effect size internal variable was .54. Otherwise, the average effect size of external variable was .79, and the average effect size internal variable was .41 in 2000s.
For the external variables, the highest variable was 'drive to thinness'(.98) in 1990s, but 'diet'(1.09) in 2000s. And for the internal variables, the highest variable was 'depression'(1.22) in 1990s, but 'anger'(.71) in 2000s.
