This study focuses on how belief-based dependence motivation changes individuals’ decisions and organizational game strategies through two empirical analyses. I explain the theoretical background of the empirical studies in Chapter 1.
In Chapter 2, the empirical analysis of individual decisions exploits CHFS2017’s household data to study misplaced confidence when perception deviates from objective financial knowledge. Observing the relationship between “misplaced confidence” and stock market participation and net worth, I explain the mystery of limited stock market participation: misplaced confidence leads to sub-optimal choices. The study also finds that the positive correlation between objective financial knowledge and stock market participation is affected by threshold effects.
In Chapter 3, the empirical analysis of worker labor game strategies in organizations employs a field experiment to investigate which information environment team-based incentives work better. This experiment was conducted in two spinning factories in Henan, China. Research focuses on workers doing the same individualistic task but still paid according to team performances. For about three months, we have given three types of performance feedback: baseline, intra-team, and inter-team feedback. This experiment find that workers' productivity was highest with the intra-team feedback and lowest with the baseline feedback, suggesting that peer pressure and group status concerns are important in making team incentives work.
