This paper examines how three topics that have been discussed in Korean morphological research since the 1950s were described in Joseoneo Sajeon (1938, 1940) and Keun Sajeon (1947–1957) and how related research has developed up to the present. First, it examines the research of the 1960s and 1970s that focused on identifying and cataloging derivational affixes and new perspectives that emerged in the 1990s. Second, it surveys the macroscopic trends in structural, generative, and cognitive morphology research that analyzed “-eum” and “-ki” as endings or affixes. Third, it summarizes the discussion about [noun (N) + verb (V) + suffix (suf)] constructions, known as synthetic compounds. The reciprocal influence between dictionary compilation and grammatical research can be captured by analyzing descriptions in dictionaries published in different periods.
