A Study on Factors Influencing Social Integration of the Mentally Disabled

This study investigated factors influencing social integration of the mentally disabled. The purpose of this study is to analyze what effect sociodemographic factor, disorder-related factor, vocational rehabilitation-related factor, and socioenvironmental factor has on the social integration and to seek for service and intervention plan to improve social integration of the mentally disabled. Research subjects of this study to attain this research purpose are as follows:
First, what is the level of social integration of the mentally disabled?
Second, are there any differences in social integration levels according to sociodemographic factor.
Third, what relation disorder-related factor, vocational rehabilitation-related factor and socioenvironmental factor of the mentally disabled has with social integration?

Fourth, what effect disorder-related factor, vocational rehabilitation-related factor and socioenvironmental factor of the mentally disabled has on social integration?
This study sampled the mentally disabled using community psychiatric rehabilitation centers of Seoul, Gyeonggi, Gwangju and North Jeolla Regions, distributed 700 copies of structured questionnaires, and 344 copies were used for research analysis.
T-test, F-test, Pearson correlation coefficient r, multiple regression analysis were conducted on the collected data using SPSS 18 according to research subject.
Results of this research are as follows:
Factors having difference according to social integration level of sociodemographic factors were gender, marital status, educational background, religion and the average monthly income of family. Disease duration of correlation between disorder-related factor and social integration was -.190(p<0.01), which indicated a negative correlation; of vocational rehabilitation-related factors, vocational rehabilitation desire was .122(p<0.05), and vocational rehabilitation attitude was .150(p<0.01), which showed a positive correlation. Social support of socioenvironmental factors was .354(p<0.01), which indicated a positive correlation; social stigma was -.145(p<0.01), which showed a negative correlation.
The factor meaningfully influencing social integration was socioenvironmental factor; social support had a positive influence, but social stigma had a negative influence.
Through these results, I suggest as follows:
First, programs for promotion of supportive environment are needed to improve social support for the mentally disabled. Also, we need to expand service in hospital, community welfare center, and rehabilitation center to raise the qualitative aspects such as informational support and functional support as well as social support.
Second, positive intervention is needed to reduce social stigma of the mentally disabled. Programs to help have a proper understanding are necessary through understanding, prevention education, experience and campaign regarding mental handicap targeting the whole local community.

본 연구는 정신장애인의 사회통합에 영향을 미치는 요인에 대해 파악하고자 하였다. 본 연구의 목적은 인구사회학적 요인, 장애 관련 요인, 직업재활 관련 요인, 사회환경적 요인이 사회통합에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 분석하여 정신장애인의 사회통합 증진을 위한 서비스와 개입방안을 모색하는데 있다. 이러한 연구 목적을 달성하기 위하여 본 연구에서 다룬 연구문제는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 정신장애인들의 사회통합 수준은 어떠한가?
둘째, 정신장애인들의 인구사회학적 요인에 따라 사회통합 수준에 차 이가 있는가?
셋째, 정신장애인들의 장애 관련 요인, 직업재활 관련 요인, 사회환경적 요인은 사회통합과 어떠한 관계가 있는가?
넷째, 정신장애인의 장애 관련 요인, 직업재활 관련 요인, 사회환경적 요인은 사회통합에 어떠한 영향을 미치는가?

본 연구는 서울․경기․광주․전북 지역의 정신장애인 사회복귀시설을 이용하는 정신장애인을 대상으로 임의표집하여 구조화된 설문지 700부를 배포하였고, 344부가 연구 분석에 사용되었다.
연구문제에 따라 수집된 자료는 SPSS 18을 이용하여, t-test, F-검증, 피어슨 상관계수 r, 다중회귀분석을 실시하였다.
본 연구에서 도출된 결과는 다음과 같다.
인구사회학적 요인 중 사회통합 수준에 따라 차이를 보이는 요인은 성별, 결혼여부, 학력, 종교, 가족의 월평균 소득으로 나타났다.
장애 관련 요인과 사회통합과의 상관관계는 유병기간이 -.190(p<0.01)로 부적상관관계를 나타냈으며, 직업재활 관련 요인 중에는 직업재활욕구가 .122(p<0.05), 직업재활태도는 .150(p<0.01)로 정적상관관계를 나타냈다. 사회환경적 요인 중 사회적지지가 .354(p<0.01)로 정적상관관계를 나타냈고, 사회적 낙인은 -.145(p<0.01)로 부적상관관계를 나타냈다.
사회통합에 유의하게 영향을 미치는 요인은 사회환경적 요인으로 사회적 지지는 정적으로 영향을 미쳤으나, 사회적 낙인은 부적으로 영향을 미쳤다.
이상과 같은 연구결과를 통해 다음과 같은 제언을 하고자 한다.
첫째, 정신장애인들의 사회적 지지 향상을 위해 지지적인 환경조성을 위한 프로그램이 필요하다. 또한 사회적 지지 뿐만 아니라 정보적 지지, 기능적 지지 등 질적인 측면을 향상시키기 위해 병원, 사회복지관, 재활기관 등에서 서비스를 확대시켜야 할 필요가 있다.
둘째, 정신장애인 사회적 낙인 감소를 위해 적극적인 개입이 필요하다. 지역사회 전체 대상으로 정신장애 이해 및 예방교육, 정신장애체험, 캠페인 등을 통해 올바른 이해를 도모하는 프로그램 필요하다.
