제도와 마음: 현상학 및 언어･심리철학적 접근 = Institutions and the Mind: Approaches from Phenomenology and Philosophy of Language and Psychology

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 제도의 수립을 가능하게 하는 몇 가지 조건, 즉, 집단지향성, 공유언어, 준수동기 등이 생성되고 발전, 확산되는 과정을 인간의 마음의 능력과 일상적인 상호작용관계에 기초하여 설명하는 것을 목적으로 하고 있다. 제도의 기초를 이루고 있는 이들 조건들에 대하여 관심을 기울이는 제도연구자들은 아직은 드물다. 자신이 사용하고 있는 언어의 의미를 누구나 공유할 수 있으며, 상대가 이를 이해하지 못한다면 이는 상대의 무지와 편협 때문이라 생각한다. 그러나 실제로 공통된 언어의 의미나 집단지향성을 수립하는 일은 결코 간단한 문제가 아니며, 이런 기본조건들이 갖추어지지 않았을 때 제도는 성공적으로 작동하기 어렵다. 이런 점에서 제도의 실패는 단지 제도 자체의 문제가 아니라 이를 가능하게 하는 인간의 마음의 능력과 관계적 생성물들에 대한 무지에서 비롯될 가능성이 높다.
이 연구는 크게 두 가지 문제를 다룬다. 첫째, 인간의 마음이 가지고 있는 여러 가지의 능력에 대해서는 Husserl, Heidegger등의 현상학, Searle, Anscombe 등의 제도철학, Wittgenstein의 언어 및 심리철학의 연구를 통하여 정리하였다. 둘째, 인간의 마음에서부터 언어와 규범과 같은 사회적 실재들이 성립되어 나오는 과정에 대해서는 Garfinkel의 민생방법론(Ethnomethodology)과 Shotter, Gergen 등 사회구성주의자들의 연구들을 참고하였다.
연구결과에 따르면, 인간은 제도의 수립을 가능하게 하는 여러 가지의 마음의 능력 즉 지향능력, 지위기능 부여능력, 규칙이해능력, 언어능력, 무사고적인 지각능력, 습관화능력 등을 가지고 있다. 특히, Garfinkel과 사회구성주의자들에 의하면 제도연구자들이 주어진 것으로 간주하는 비공식제도, 공통된 의미를 가진 언어, 공유된 신념이나 공유된 상식 등은 이러한 마음의 능력을 가진 사람들이 서로 관계하고 상호작용하는 일상적인 삶속에서 창조적으로 구성되고 수립되어 나온다. 행동의 규범이나 공통의 목표를 위하여 자발적으로 협력할 동기 역시 일상의 관계 속에서 발생할 수 있다. 서구사회에서 오래 전부터 다양한 형태의 자생제도들이 발전해 왔고 또한 넓게 확산되어 있는 것은 이러한 마음의 능력과 관계적 상호작용에 적합한 공동체 여건이 일찍부터 발전되어 있었기 때문이다. 일상의 삶과 상호작용 속에서 협력적인 행동규범을 배울 수 없다면 상호협력에 근거한 제도의 수립과 발전은 쉽지 않을 것임을 이 연구는 시사하고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study tries to approach institutional conditions such as collective intentionality, shared language, and rule-following motives, in particular from the perspective of mental capacity and routine relations of everyday life. Researchers hardly pay attention to these conditions and their genetic origins. They usually take them for granted without careful examination. It is not easy, however, to build a society that meets these conditions. It is almost impossible to build institutions under circumstances lacking these basic conditions. Many institutional failures do not come from the defects of institutions but due to a lacks in these basic conditions.
This study deals with two major issues. First, this study explored the mind through different angles proposed by phenomenology, philosophy of institution, and Wittgenstein’s philosophy of language and psychology to identify the diverse capacity of the human mind. Second, this study referred to the ethno-methodological studies of Garfinkel and social constructionist explanations as from Shotter and Gergen to explain the procedures through which social realities such as language and norms are generated and formed.
The results of the research show that people have diverse and unique mental capacities, including intentional understanding and capacity to construct, the capacity to give status, the ability to understand rules, language and speech ability, and the ability to form habits. In particular, the basic elements from which institutions can be built, such as shared language meaning, collective intentionality can be created from everyday interactions and relations among human beings living with their minds according to Garfinkel and social constructionists. The willingness to respect rules and common corporate goals can also be generated creatively within the relations of everyday life. It is these communal and relational conditions that made Western societies able to build so many self-organizing economic and political organizations. This study implies that it would not be easy to build institutions based on spontaneous cooperation without everyday relations and interactions that open opportunities to generate diverse relations.
