This study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of carbon tetrachloride on the cellular transport of alpha-aminoisobutyric acid-^14C and incorporation into proteins and conversion to ^14CO_2 of amino acids mixed -^14C in rats.
Administration of carbon tetrachloride by means of stomach tube in fast caused a significant decrease of the cellular transport together with the decrease of the incorporation into protein in liver. The incorporation also decreased in serum protein but showed no noticeable change in kidney protein.
The activities of expired ^14CO_2 at varied intervals following the administration of amino acids mixed-^14C were not significantly altered by carbon tetrachloride poisoning.
From the experimental results, it is deduced that the decreasing effect of carbon tetrachloride on liver protein synthesis is due to the decrease of amino acid transport as well as the toxic effects on protein synthetic sites.
