외국의 지적재산권 보호와 모방능력의 상호작용이 한국 IT산업의 수출패턴에 미치는 영향 = The Effects of the Interaction of the Foreign Intellectual Property Rights and Imitation Ability on the Export Patterns of IT Industrial Sectors in Korea

This paper examine the extent to which the interaction of foreign intellectual property rights(IPRs) and imitation ability affect the export patterns of total IT and disaggregated industrial sectors in Korea. Specifying the gravity models based on the models which are designed by Smith(1999) and Liu and Lin(2006) and applying the maximum likelihood estimation of balanced panel data from 1988 to 2002, I find the empirical results which are interesting in drawing the implication of the export strategies at the firm level as well as the trade policy in Korea.
The results are summarized as follows It is found that the foreign protection of IPRs have the market expansion effects on total IT exports of Korea. These IPRs effects on its exports are different according to the national development level. That is, the IPRs effects are significant to increase its export to developing countries. The effective relationships are not given between IPRs and exports to developed countries. It is shown that the market power effects are not significantly different in the case of considering the structural change after the implementation of Trips agreement. Secondly, it is found that the foreign IPRs have the influences on promoting the total exports by interacting with any level of imitation ability. But in the case of the disaggregated IT exports both market expansion and power effects do exist without the level of imitation ability. This result suggests that the foreign imitation threats have no important role in the export strategies of Korean firms which wish to increase their profits with both expanding and reducing its IT exports.
