탈북대학생의 한국 사회와 대학 생활 적응에 관한 생애사연구 -교육대학교 학생을 중심으로-

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Utilizing Mandelbaum’s life story analysis method, this qualitative research involves interviews conducted between March and August 2019 with two North Korean refugee college students, to gauge how they adapted themselves to the Korean society and life at the National University of Education (NUE).
According to the study, the interviewees came from diverse family and educational backgrounds in North Korea. Their migration process and domestic adaptation to South Korea and the NUE were also different, although both of them were strong-willing and self-restrained. Their determination helped them overcome the difficulties they faced in their adaptation to Korean society and life at NUE. Research participants similar to the North Korean refugee college students in other majors or departments also experienced comparable difficulties in the adaptation process, such as language expression and cultural adaptation, social exchange, lack of basic knowledge due to differences in curriculum between North and South Korea, as well as challenges in learning English and making presentations. The NUE is a specialized university that trains elementary teachers requiring a high level of professionalism, sense of responsibility, and trust. After graduating from the NUE, they are eligible to become teachers if they clear the employment examination. However, the research participants were anxious about parents’ general concerns about entrusting their children to teachers from North Korea. Unlike North Korea, in South Korea, where home-room teachers are rotated and diversity is emphasized, North Korean refugee teachers also have some unique advantages. Since they have seen both sides of Korea, they can perform better than their South Korean peers in introducing the value of South Korea’s democratization and economic development to elementary school students.
