A Preliminary Report on Cognitive Inhibition and Suicide Risk in Complex Regional Pain Syndrome

The risk of suicide in patients diagnosed with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is relatively high. Cognitive inhibition, a major component of executive function, is a key factor in regulating emotions, cognitions, and behaviors, and deficits in cognitive inhibition have been strongly associated with suicidal behaviors. This study compared the performance of cognitive inhibition tasks in three groups: 1) CRPS patients with high suicide risk (N=15), 2) CRPS patients with low suicide risk (N=7), and 3) healthy controls (N=15). The results indicate that CRPS patients with high suicide risk showed significant deficits in cognitive inhibition when compared to both of the other groups. These findings suggest the possibility of utilizing cognitive inhibition as a risk factor in suicide prevention and treatment with CRPS patients in clinical settings.
