In this treatise I tried to explain the meaning and concept of 'subject novel' and the function of it's narrator. 'Subject novel' can be characterized with authoritative narrator, strict formal unity and strong message. As to speak 'subject novel' is tendenciously very intentional genre.
I saw in history of Korean novel, specially on colonial period and North Korean literature the 'subject novel' is very apparent phenomenon. It seems the effect of the intervention of historical mandate or social discourse like as political ideology. Novel was forced to be means of class struggle propaganda or state mobilization. My analyse focused on mechanism of inter textual process behind surface structure of meanings.
In case of Moo-jung(무정) written by Yi kwang-su, it's main character 'Hyung-sik' shows the condition fully internalized Enlightenment discourse. And authoritative narrator assure and support his point of view. Consequently possibility of emotional research was blocked up. So it makes this novel can be read as a monologic discourse. Additionally I analysed Hwang-hon(황혼) and Pyongyang-sokdo(평양속도), in these novels I reached similar conclusion.
The aim of my treatise was to present how we understand the problem of narrative restraint. I believe narrative restraint have been functioned as a condition of political restraint. Novel is great literary genre not because it speaks to use authoritative discourse but because it accept many humble people's dialogue. The problem of 'subject novel' should be considered more seriously.
