Hyojado (Xiaozi-tu, 孝子圖), which illustrates stories of filial piety, is a figure painting with didactic purpose. It aims to inculcate Hyo (孝), filial piety, not only as a virtue for individuals but also as a dominant ideology of Joseon dynasty along with loyalty. In other words, Hyojado of Joseon dynasty was made to serve the purpose of establishing Confucian ethics.
Hyojado was produced in two formats, in print and painting. Hyojado in print includes three types: Model Behaviors in Three Bonds (三綱行實圖, Samganghaengsildo), Model Behaviors on Five Basic Human Relations (五倫行實圖, Oryunhaengsildo) and family album of stories of filial acts (家傳 孝行錄): Hyojado in painting includes the Hyojado screen and an icon Hyo from illustrated Chinese characters of genre painting.
Hyojado of Joseon dynasty is an illustration of Chinese and Korean stories of filial piety, mainly stories of a filial son's adventure to rescue his parents in trouble and to surmount obstacles. A single story of filial acts is composed of several episodes and one episode of diverse events. According to when filial acts are performed such as whether at the time of everyday life, accidents, troubles, or after the death of the parents, stories of filial acts can be classified: most of the stories deal with the funeral and memorial ritual after the death of the parents. The contents of stories are varied depending on the place and the time of origin. While the earlier, Chinese stories are full of miraculous stories, the later, Korean ones are replete with realistic and practicable stories. The stories in Hyojado in print change according to their social background and the interests of a ruling group, but Hyojado in painting portrays mostly Chinese stories of filial piety.
Since Hyojado in print was produced with a view to inculcate filial piety, to illiterate people, it is necessary to pay attention to the pictorial methods of representing stories. Hyojado in print is composed of several episodes in one picture: each episode is portrayed with one typical scene from an event. The portrayal of events follows stereotyped conventions to make people understand easily. As a result, symbolic devices which deliver messages concisely become crucial. The scenes are generally arranged according to the chronological order of events, but in the case of events happening in the same place, the scenes are arranged regardless of the time order.
The composition of such pictures becomes more ambiguous, simplified and horizontal. The earlier Hyojado contained diverse events in one painting in order to deliver stories in details: the later ones contain shorter stories with fewer events in one painting with the concentration on one event and more landscapes. Since the portrayal of landscape represents contemporary painting styles, the depiction of figures becomes more realistic, meticulous and Korean in people's physical features and attires.
The patrons of Hyojado Screen were members of the royal and noble families. Therefore, the Xiaozi-tu Screen, unlike illustrative Hyojado in print, portrays a single event in one painting, delivering messages suggestively. Hyojado Screens, produced from the early Joseon were used to educate the royal prince the value of filial piety and to be bestowed upon filial sons as a royal gift. The members of noble families commissioned screens for the education of their descendents. The stories of filial acts represented in the screens, although diverse, reveal some patterns of preference of each period.
The icon of illustrated Chinese characters, Hyo, lies at a transit from symbolic paintings to decorative paintings. Through the Chinese letter, Hyo, used as icons, it can be surmised what was the most common story of filial piety during the Joseon dynasty. This period, one aspect of the diverse Hyojado, indicates a transit from illustrative approach to symbolic approach.
