반사실적 인과론과 인과 구조식 접근법 = 활성 경로 이론의 재검토

국문 초록 (Abstract)

인과 구조식 접근법은 주어진 상황의 인과 구조를 파악하는 데 유용하다. 활성 경로 이론은 ‘정황상 필요한 것으로서의 원인’ 개념을 인과 구조식 접근법을 사용하여 체계화함으로써 개별 인과 관계를 분석하는 이론으로, 반사실적 인과론의 핵심적 직관은 유지하면서도 기존의 반사실적 인과론이 직면하는 문제점들을 피할 수 있는 장점이 있다. 하지만 활성 경로 이론 역시 강력한 반례에 직면한다. 활성경로 이론에 대한 반례와 이 반례를 해결하기 위해 제시된 기본 연결망 이론의 기저에는 결과 사건의 발생을 한편으로 촉진하면서 다른 한편으로는 억제하는 사건은 그 결과 사건의 원인일 수 없다는 직관이 자리 잡고 있다. 활성 경로 이론을 사용한 인과 상황의 분석은 이 직관의 적용을 조절할 수 있는 근거를 제공함으로써 반례를 재검토할 수 있게 하며 인과 관계에 대한 직관과 분석 간의 관계를 비판적으로 고찰할 수 있는 기회를 제공한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The structural equations approach constitutes exciting advance toward the elusive analysis of token causation. The active route account employs the idea that causes are necessary post factum to analyze token causation. This account maintains the counterfactual theorist"s intuition that effects depend counterfactually on causes, but does not suffer from counterexamples to the counterfactual theories of causation. However, the active route account appears to have its own counterexamples. In these counterexamples, an event c promotes another event e on the one hand, and also prohibits e on the other hand. Intuitively, this kind of events is not a cause, but the active route account disagrees. I examine this intuition, and argue that it does not provide a litmus test for evaluating the adequacy of the active route account. A good account of causation ought to not only respect our causal intuitions, but also guide our intuitions or even help in revising our thinking about causation when needed. The active route account has the characteristics of a good account, and deserves thorough and continuous critical research.
