Paul’s Encomium of Love is highly regarded both literarily and the-ologically, yet it raises several interpretative issues. First, the Enco-mium of Love appears to interrupt the natural flow of the surrounding context, as it is inserted between chapters 12 and 14 of 1 Corinthi-ans. Second, whereas Paul typically assigns a subject when describing love, in this passage love is presented in absolute terms without any subject. Third, the encomium notably avoids the verbal form ἀγαπάω, instead using only the noun ἀγάπη, and it omits other common Greek terms used to express love in the broader Hellenistic cultural context. These questions prompt a reconsideration of why Paul chose ἀγάπη as his central theme and what his purpose was in placing the Encomium of Love within the structure of 1 Corinthians 12–14.
Building on these critical concerns, this study investigates Paul's intention in composing the Encomium of Love, specifically exploring the theology of love he seeks to convey and its function, from a rhetorical perspective. To this end, the research applies rhetorical methodology to examine the boundaries of the text, its rhetorical structure and genre, and conducts textual criticism to identify the text closest to the original form. Furthermore, it proposes a transla-tion that reflects the speech-like character of the encomium. The exegetical work focuses on the rhetorical techniques employed by Paul and, by situating them within the rhetorical context, elucidates the theology and function of love that Paul intended to communicate to the Corinthian community.
The findings of this study are as follows. First, Paul’s decision not to use common Greek terms for love can be attributed to the influe-nce of Judaism, wherein the full meaning of love is encapsulated in the term ἀγάπη. Second, Paul’s use of love in the absolute form— without a subject—is intended to suggest not only love for one’s ne-ighbor but also divine love, the love of God. To convey this, he del-iberately avoids the verbal form ἀγαπάω. The love Paul speaks of is God's love bestowed upon individuals through the Holy Spirit, and he urges the Corinthian community to reflect on their own love in light of this divine love. Without love, nothing has value(13,1–3). Paul presents personified actions of love as a standard for such reflection and calls his audience to live in accordance with this personified love(13,4–7). He then expands the scope of love to an eschatological horizon, asserting that through continuous self-reflection and growth in love, believers will ultimately encounter God face to face(13,8–13).
Third, the rhetorical situation that explains why Paul places the Encomium of Love between chapters 12 and 14 of 1 Corinthians lies in his pastoral concern: he challenges those in the Corinthian comm-unity who sought to glorify themselves through spiritual gifts without reflecting the love of God. Paul urges them to examine themselves, grow in love, and live lives shaped by love.
In conclusion, the theology and function of love as presented in the Encomium of Love can be summarized as follows: Christians, having received the love of God through the Holy Spirit in baptism, are fundamentally defined by love. The foundation and standard of Chri-stian conduct lie in God’s love, and it is this love that orients belie-vers toward God—not only in the present but also eschatologically. Through this theology of love, Paul calls the Corinthian community to reflect deeply on the nature and presence of love in their own lives.
