The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of the acceptable vocabulary and the expressive vocabulary to be found easily accessible and interesting through the reading of storybooks to enhance children's vocabulary skills due to developmental delays.
The subjects of this study were three selected children with developmental delays who have been diagnosed by a psychiatrist named Yu-ajung based in Y Child Development Center in Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul with obtaining the consent of their parents. The experimental period was conducted total of seventeen weeks during 11 July to 2 November. At the baseline phase, development was measured for each target in order to determine the child's language skills in their natural environment without conducting the use of periodic stimulus before reading storybooks. The baseline measurements were started at the same time with three children until all were stable. It took child A four sessions, for child B seven sessions, and lastly, child C ten sessions. At the intervention phase, five books were read repeatedly once daily, five times a week during a five week period. For consistency, it was repeated for three sessions after three weeks at the end of the intervention phase. The final results were then collected. From the baseline to the intervention, the entire process was recorded on video. I then analyzed the language of the children through watching the videos and indicating the results through the use of tables and graphs.
In this study the results are summarized as below:
Initially, reading storybooks was effective in improving the acceptable vocabulary for children with developmental delays. If we look at each case individually, Child A has increased to 32.5%, Child B 42.5%, and Child C 30%. Although they overall did not share the same effect, their comprehension has undoubtedly improved.
Second, reading storybooks was effective in improving the expressive vocabulary for children with developmental delays. If we look at each case individually as in the first result summary we see that Child A has increased to 32.5% Child B 42.5%, and Child C 20%. As in the first results, they did not share the same effects, yet they all achieved personal improvement.
Lastly, without the weekly intervention, the children had a permanent enhancement effect on their language comprehension and expression of reading storybooks.
As a result, the reading of storybooks can be effective in keeping for the effect of the acceptable vocabulary and the expressive vocabulary to enhance children's vocabulary skills due to developmental delays. and the repetitive reading of storybooks is easily a good use at home or in the general pre-school.
It is also presented as an effective strategy to promote the child's vocabulary of developmental delays in a natural environment.
