(International Agency for Research on Cancer)은 엑스선과 감마선을 1급 발암물질로 분류했다.

Radiation is used in various fields. In 2020, 9143 organizations took licenses for the use of radiation, and this number increased every year. About 17% of these organizations are for permission. As the number of organizations increased, the number of employees increased. The number of radiation workers was 146,790 in 2020.
X-ray and γ-ray were classified as Group 1 carcinogens by International Agency for Research on Cancer. Therefore, when using a radiation-generating device or radioactive isotope, it is necessary to manage the safety of radiation workers and the public. In addition, the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) also recommends that justification and optimization be observed when using radiation. Optimizing protection is applied in situations where justification is considered to have been made, and optimization of protection is at the heart of the system of radiological protection. Six studies were done to implement the protection optimization recommended by the ICRP.
First, the shielding capability of slit-shaped structures for scattered X-rays was evaluated using Monte Carlo method. As the use of radiation for medical purposes increases, the exposure dose of medical workers is also increasing. Various studies on changing the shielding material have been conducted to reduce this dose. Recently, a new method to reduce the dose at the entrance of the radiation treatment room was proposed by using the photoelectric effect that occurs when the radiation is scattered. Because this method is particularly effective for low-energy photons, in this study, a slit-type structure was proposed as an excellent shielding structure against scattered X-rays in a general photography room, and was evaluated the shielding effect by Monte Carlo simulation. As a result of the calculation, this study found that a shielding effect was approximately 99.9% or more with a structure using 2 mm thickness and 2 mm intervals, excluding the heights of the floor and the patient where scattering occurs directly.
Second, a new structure for duct shielding of the radiation therapy room was proposed. Treatment rooms for radiation therapy using accelerators should be physically isolated from the outside for radiation shielding by a shield structure. However, ducts must be installed to provide fresh air to the room and discharge harmful gases such as ozone. Because this gap cannot be blocked, various types of shielding methods are recommended in National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP) Report No. 49, and 151 were suggested, and this method requires a lot of space and a heavy shield. Therefore, various types of slit structures that can be installed inside the duct were conceived, and the radiation shielding effect of this structure was studied using MCNP. The energy spectrum of X-rays measured using NaI(Tl) detector was used in calculations. The average energy of the X-ray, which is known to offer a nominal 6 MeV output, was 0.336 MeV, and the mode energy was 0.137 MeV. This study calculated the transmission factor of a shielding structure made of 2, 3, and 4 mm thick steel plates using this energy spectrum.
Third, gamma radiation transmission along the multi-bend mazes was calculated. Installing a maze in the corridor reduces the shielding materials in the door at the end of the pathway. This study calculated gamma transmission along single-, double-, and triple-bend mazes, which were applied to a nondestructive test workplace by the Monte Carlo method. In the facility using 192Ir 1.85 TBq, the lengths of corridors to reduce the effective dose under the limitation without shielding door were 10 and 6 m in double- and triple-bend mazes, respectively.
Fourth, the air leakage rate from a fume hood in a radioisotope laboratory was estimated using CFD simulations. The leakage rate of air from a fume hood is essential for calculating the internal exposure at a workplace using the dose conversion factors recommended by the International Atomic Energy Agency. In this study, the air leakage rate from a fume hood was estimated in a radioisotope laboratory using computational fluid dynamics simulations. For this purpose, a three-dimensional fume hood model was built using CAD software. In this model, the leakage rate was calculated to be 3%, with face velocities between 0.1∼1.0 m/s at the sash opening of the fume hood. This rate rapidly decreased to zero as the face velocities decreased to less than 0.1 m/s.
Fifth, a low-resolution gamma-ray spectrometer for monitoring radioactive Levels of wastewater was designed. Wastewater containing radioactive materials is stored in decay tanks, typically installed in basements to restrict public access. Specific activity is measured by a gamma spectroscopy system or a gamma counter for several hours per sample before discharge. The specific activity conversion coefficient for converting a measured value from a 1.5″ NaI (Tl) detector installed on a tank into specific activity was calculated to simplify the sample collection and measurement procedures before draining. The experimental calibration was performed in a test water tank with a volume of 14 L filled with diluted reference source 18F, which is most commonly used in hospitals. The specific activity of the test water was measured with a gamma spectroscopy system using a high-purity germanium detector calibrated with certified reference materials. The change in the conversion coefficient was corrected based on a Monte Carlo calculation according to the difference in the water tank volume. Finally, it was determined whether the minimum detectable activity of this system was lower than that of the draining standard. The counts for the specific activity conversion factor and MDA were evaluated as 5.5389×10^10 and 2.09×10^5 for 18F and for the one-hour count, respectively. The MDA was lower than the standard value. Thus, this system can be used for discharge determination.
Finally, activation for 50 MeV cyclotron irradiation service was evaluated using Monte Carlo method and inventory code. Korea Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences has provided various beam irradiation services to researchers using a 50 MeV cyclotron beam line. In particular, since the neutron beam service uses the nuclear reaction between protons and beryllium, the possibility of activation of the irradiated sample increases by using a high current. This study used MCNP 6.2 and FISPACT-II 4.0 to evaluate the possible activation during the 35 MeV 20 μA proton irradiation for neutron beam service, which the researchers prefer. As a result of the calculation, long-lived radioisotopes were produced if the iron, copper, and tungsten samples were irradiated for more than 1 hour. And their specific radioactivity exceeded the self-disposal standard level. Under the conditions of 2 hours of daily irradiation, no activation occurred in the building materials, and the internal exposure of workers due to air activation inside the irradiation room was very insignificant. And when this air was discharged into the environment, the radioactivity, including this air, also satisfied the emission standard.
