사이버대학 성인학습자의 멘토링 사례연구: 참여자의 경험을 중심으로 = A case study of the adult learners` mentoring in a cyber-university: based on participants` experiences

This study analyzed the experiences of adult learners who participated in a mentoring program based on case study approach. This study is meaningful because there have not been enough efforts for understanding the processes of cyber mentoring, while its educational value is not minimal. The specific purposes of this study were as follows: 1) participants`` motivation, 2) activities and interaction, 3) influences of the program to the mentors and mentees, 4) barriers and recommendations. Thirteen adult learners who have joined in a mentoring program from a department of a cyber-university for two years from the 1st semester of 2012 participated in this study. The data from several documentations, e-mail interviews, and focused-interviews were analyzed with the pattern-matching-logic after categorized by an inductive approach. The results of the study were as follows. First, the participants`` motivations were based on the need to adjust themselves to the online learning and enhance their self-directed learning abilities. Second, their main activities included cognitive activities(online learning and self-directed learning strategies), emotional support, and modeling, which were meaningful with the experience learning theory. Third, the types of interaction were various depending upon the activities, while the communication between mentors and mentees has not been effective in some cases. Fourth, almost every participant experienced positive changes after the program, while these changes could be results of collaborative development of mentoring. Finally, three recommendations were proposed for further programs as follows: strengthening of mentors`` capabilities, enhancement of mentees`` motivation, and matching of mentors and mentees considering their geographical distances. This study has theoretical and practical implications, in that it provided with empirical information of the mentoring program with adult learners in a cyber-university, while the generalization of the results is limited due to the methodological approach of case study.
