This study aims to identify; (a) the relationship of cognitive style to locus of control, (b) the relationship of cognitive style to adjustment mechanism, (c) the relationship of locus of control to adjustment mechanism, and (d) the relationship of cognitive style and locus of control to adjustment mechanism.
Subjects were 407 college students (248 males and 159 females) who take Introductory Psychology and Educational Psychology courses in 1980 fall semester at the Kyungpook National University. They were administered Group Embedded Figures test (GEFT), the revised Rotter's Internal-External Locus of Control Test (I-E), and Diagnostic Adjustment Mechanism Inventory (DAMI). DAMI was designed to measure the relative intensity of three major groups of adjustment mechanism such as defense, aggression, and escape mechanism.
Corerlational approach was used to identify the relationship of cognitive style to locus of control, the relationship of cognitive style to adjustment mechanism, the relationship of locus of control to adjustment mechanism, and the relationship of two variables of cognitive style and locus of control to adjustment mechanism.
The results of this study were as follows;
1. The correlation coefficient between GEFT and I-E scores was not significant in both sexes.
2. The correlation coefficient between GEFT and DAMI scores was not significant in both sexes.
3. The relationship of locus of control to adjustment mechanism were as follows;
(a) The correlation coefficient between internal control scale and defense mechanism scale scores was significant in both sexes.
(b) The correlation coefficient between I-E and escape mechanism scale scores was not significant in both sexes.
(c) The correlation coefficient between external control scale and aggression scale scores was significant in only female students.
4. The multiple correlation coefficients to find predictive power of cognitive style and locus of control to predict adjustment mechanism can be summerized as follows;
(a) GEFT and I-E scores can predict defence mechanism of both sexes.
(b) GEFT and I-E scores can not predict escape mechanism of both sexes.
(c) GEFT and I-E scores can predict aggresaion mechanism of female studentt, but can not predict aggression mechanism of male students.
