As the world`s second most populous country, India should also be one of the biggest markets for aviation. Alongside China, airlines and airports in India should be the driving force of Aviation growth in Asia. However, focus in the recent past has been on the opportunities to be found in China. Due to political and economic factors, growth has been somewhat limited in India. Some changes have occurred, such as policy shifts and GDP growth and there is optimism for taking advantage of opportunities that exist, especially given the favourable demographic advantage India has over China. However, negative factors still exist, such as airport constraints and a lack of cohesion within India. These negative elements have hindered some of the growth potential. The domestic aviation sector in India grew by more than 20% in 2015 and it is therefore of interest to know what the drivers behind that growth are. In addition, the introduction of the National Civil Aviation Policy (NCAP) in mid-2016 is set to create a new operating environment for the aviation industry. Through an evaluation of literature about aviation in India and analysis of the NCAP, we look at the current state of the Indian Aviation Industry and assess the published outlooks on the direction it is heading.
