The purpose of this study is to confirm the mediating effects of Academic Self-Efficacy on the relationship between Social Support and Career Aspiration for middle school students. For this purpose, 405 middle school students in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do were surveyed with Social Support scale, Career Aspiration scale, and Academic Self-Efficacy scale. Based on a sample of 405 samples, the analysis was conducted using t-test, correlation analysis, and three-step regression analysis of Baron & Kenny (1986) by utilizing SPSS 18.0.
The result of the study is summarized as follows.
First, there were statistically significant differences in gender, except for friends’ support and Social Support. There were statistically significant differences in self-regulated efficacy according to grade. Second, the correlation between Social Support, Career Aspiration, and Academic Self-Efficacy was confirmed. As a result, there was a significant positive correlation between Social Support, Career Aspiration, and Academic Self-Efficacy. Third, Academic Self- Efficacy is mediated in part between Social Support and Career Aspiration.
This result implies that Career Aspiration can be changed according to Academic Self-Efficacy in middle school students who do not have social support system. Therefore, according to the results of this study, it can be helpful to improve the level of Career Aspiration by using Academic Self-Efficacy for students with low Career Aspiration when conducting career counseling for middle school students.
