Background : Since the implementation of the 6-year pharmaceutical college curriculum in Korea, the role of preceptors in clinical pharmacy practice education (CPPE) has gained significance. This study aims to evaluate the differences in perception and satisfaction regarding CPPE through a survey of students and preceptors who completed CPPE at the Veterans Hospital in Seoul, Korea, from 2022 to 2023.
Methods : The survey consisted of 17 questions for both students and preceptors, with an additional 7 ques tions directed only at preceptors. Responses categorized as “excellent” were deemed positive, while those classified as “average” or “insufficient” were considered negative.
Results : A total of 70 respondents (48 students and 22 preceptors) participated in the survey. Regarding the overall evaluation of CPPE, the perception of “providing a positive educational environment” showed the largest disparity in positive evaluation rates between students and preceptors (85.4% vs. 50.0%, p<0.05). In assessing preceptor competency, the aspect of “systematic education” exhibited the greatest difference (97.9% vs. 50.0%, p<0.05). In subgroup analysis of preceptors, those who provided clinical lectures had a higher positive response rate compared to practice preceptors, and preceptors with over 10 years of experience had higher positive responses than those with less than 10 years. The primary factor hindering preceptor effectiveness was identified as “the pressure of concurrent work” (95.5%), while the most significant motivating factor was “financial compensation” (68.2%).
Conclusion : The study results indicated that students had a more favorable perception of CPPE compared to preceptors [4.24 (±0.73) vs 4.84 (±0.43), p<0.05]. This study aimed to analyze the perceptual differences between preceptors and students in CPPE and to enhance the quality of the educational experience.
