[PURPOSE] The purpose of this study is comprehensively understand Seongagwigam, the most famous work of Cheongheo Hyujeong who is a representative monk of the Joseon. For this, I examine the entire part of Seongagwigam with the research history review.
[CONTENTS] This study examines the Seongagwigam through two main research contents.
Firstly, it reviews existing research papers about Seongagwigam and trends in the field.
Secondly, it analyses the overall structure of the text by dividing its subjects and exploring its character from a new perspective. It finds that the Hyujeong emphasizes not only the integration of Seon(禪) and Gyo(敎) or ‘Relinquishing Gyo and Entering Seon(捨敎入禪)’, and investigating the phrase of Hwadu(話頭), but also the practice theory aspect of Buddhist practice.
[RESULTS] The study suggests that previous research provided preliminary steps for the development of “practice theory” and confirms that the purpose of Hyujeong was the social spread of practice. The study concludes that Seongagwigam has timeless value and proposes further research to popularize it in a modern way, as it could serve as a model for the trend of current Korean Buddhism.
