Lee, Jeong-Shik (1994). A Study on the Improvement of the Hangul Consonant System. Linguistics, Vol. 2. Since its creation by the King Sejong in the early 15th century, the Hangul, worldly known Korean alphabet, has been our proud writing system through which we Koreans express our thoughts. Recently, the world is trending toward globalization, in which English plays an important role as an international language. But the Korean consonant system lacks such English consonants as /f/, /v/, /θ/, /δ/ and /z/. This lack of foreign consonants makes us use other similar Korean consonants, which makes ourselves misunderstood. The purpose of this study is to suggest a (few) way(s) to accommodate the above foreign consonants in the Hangul system with a minimal change. It is hoped that the present suggestion serves as a stepping stone to a more elaborated Hangul system.
